The Mysterious Cannons

The cannons are a genre sculpture: two historical cannon barrels on wooden supports imitating gun carriages. They stand at the entrance to the local history museum, housed in the former home of the merchant N. A. Lednev, an architectural monument of the late 19th century. The Syzran Local History Museum is one of the oldest museums in the Samara Region. It was created between 1923 and 1925 on the initiative of the amateur local historians Nikolai Guryev and Ivan Vladimirov. Today the museum's collection numbers more than 55,000 items.

Where Did These Cannons Come From?

How the cannons came to Syzran has been lost in the mists of time. According to one version, they appeared back when the fortress was being built. According to another, they were brought to the town during the suppression of Pugachev's Rebellion, when some of the government troops were stationed in Syzran.
