A Tower with a History

The Spasskaya Tower is 21 meters (69 feet) tall including its belfry. In 1995 nine bells made by the Ust-Kamensk plant were hung in the tower; the heaviest weighs 500 kilograms (1,100 pounds). The tower has the status of a monument of federal significance.

Historical Background

The Spasskaya Tower is the oldest historical and architectural monument in Syzran, dating from the 17th century. Originally the tower had two tiers. In 1755, when the fortress town lost its military role, the tower became four-tiered: two tiers with a tent roof were added on top of its cube-shaped body, and inside the second fighting tier a gate church dedicated to the Savior Not Made by Hands was set up.

Architecture

Fitting a church into the tower radically changed its massing and appearance. Pilasters appeared at the corners of the tower. The embrasures were greatly widened, turned into windows, and decorated with relief surrounds of paired colonnettes. The tiers were accentuated with gorodki cornices (with a stepped, crenellated pattern). The tower was given the look typical of the towers of Russian fortresses and monasteries of the preceding 17th century, and so it has remained to this day. Today it is the only 17th-century fortification in the Samara Region.

Legends and Myths

Of enormous interest is the still undiscovered entrance to the tower's cellar, where a chapel was found sometime between 1850 and 1855. According to legend, an underground passage led from it to the Ascension Monastery.
