Historical Background

In the center of Vyborg, on Market Square, stands a three-story red-brick building. This Gothic-style building is a listed architectural monument. It used to house the Bank of Finland and is now home to Vyborg's administration. To build the Bank of Finland in the early 20th century, the well-known architect Karl Gustaf Nyström — a professor and academician of the Imperial Academy of Arts — was brought in.

Architecture

The design was drawn up in 1908, and in 1910 a red-brick building with an attic floor under a tall, patterned, multicolored tile roof went up on the corner of Market Square. Its architecture is striking, mixing Gothic, Nordic Art Nouveau and historical Hanseatic architecture. Such a vivid architectural accent highlights the town's rich history and its legacy of different states, styles and eras. The building is decorated with the coats of arms of Torgils Knutsson and of Vyborg Province, and with the emblem of the Hanseatic League, all in high relief*. *High relief (from the French haut-relief) is a type of sculptural relief in which the figures project boldly from the background. High reliefs are often used to decorate buildings. High reliefs in stone, bronze and other materials are used both as architectural decoration and as independent works of art. Some parts of a high relief barely touch the background or are completely detached from it.
