Historical Background
This 16th–17th-century architectural complex includes two buildings: the Burgher's Estate and the Carriage House. The exact construction date of the estate is unknown; it is thought to have appeared in the 16th century and to have belonged to a wealthy townsman. Both buildings are architectural monuments of federal significance and examples of the Gothic style. Their massive walls of stone boulders make them look like an impregnable fortress. Because of the thick walls the building looks large from outside, but the rooms inside are small. Few buildings from the Swedish period survive in Vyborg, and the Burgher's Estate is one of them. In Swedish times the whole district was built up haphazardly. Later the town got a regular plan, and many streets were rebuilt. How can you tell when a building was built? Those put up before the regular plan stand at an angle to the modern streets.
