Suzdal is part of Russia's Golden Ring and lies in the Vladimir Region. It is a town of unhurried life that looks like an illustration to Russian fairy tales. Here you should stroll and breathe in the quiet, the calm, and the antiquity. In the center of Suzdal there are no high-rises, factories, or railway stations. Instead, churches and monasteries meet you at every step: an open-air museum.

Historical Background

Suzdal's Trading Rows are a 19th-century architectural monument with two covered galleries and columns on the facade. This place, which keeps the atmosphere of an old Russian merchant town, was founded in the 12th century and still serves its original purpose as the town's shopping center.

Architecture

The Trading Rows building is a long gallery with arches and columns, built in the early 19th century. Merchants' shops were once here, and now souvenirs, clothing, household goods, and antiques are sold. The square in front is paved with stone and flanked by two small churches, the Kazan and the Resurrection.

What's On

Trade Square comes alive in summer, when it hosts a fair with local delicacies and souvenirs, and in winter the town's main Christmas tree is put up here. Locals recommend trying the medovukha (mead) sold in the Trading Rows in various versions: with raspberry, linden, horseradish, and other flavors.
