Historical Background
The Townsman's House is the only monument of residential stone architecture of the 16th–17th centuries in Suzdal and a rare one in Russia. It stands opposite the Savior-Euthymius Monastery, next to the Smolensk Church.

Suzdal is part of Russia's Golden Ring and lies in the Vladimir Region. It is a town of unhurried life that looks like an illustration to Russian fairy tales. Here you should stroll and breathe in the quiet, the calm, and the antiquity. In the center of Suzdal there are no high-rises, factories, or railway stations. Instead, churches and monasteries meet you at every step: an open-air museum.

The Townsman's House is the only monument of residential stone architecture of the 16th–17th centuries in Suzdal and a rare one in Russia. It stands opposite the Savior-Euthymius Monastery, next to the Smolensk Church.
Although the townsman's house is built of stone, its architecture echoes the traditions of wooden building. This is because in the 17th–18th centuries prosperous merchants and craftsmen began building stone houses instead of wooden ones. It is a small white building with chimneys and neat forms that stands out in the neighborhood and shows the architecture of a 17th-century town homestead.
Today the Townsman's House is part of the Vladimir-Suzdal Museum-Reserve. Inside is an exhibition devoted to 17th-century daily life. It's an interesting place to visit both outside and inside, where you can learn about the everyday life of townspeople of that time.
