Historical Background

The Church of the Prophet Elijah stands on Ivanova Gora (Ivan's Hill) in Suzdal and was built in the mid-18th century. In Soviet times it suffered destruction, and in 2010 it was restored. The church is now closed to visitors, but it draws tourists with its picturesque surroundings.

Architecture

It is a single-domed church with a tent-roofed bell tower. Its white walls contrast with the green roof and pink decorative elements such as window surrounds and rustication. The church stands on the high bank of the Kamenka, which opens a beautiful view of the Suzdal kremlin and the surrounding countryside.

What's On

Soviet times were hard for this Suzdal church. In the 1930s the bell tower and the small Church of St. John the Theologian, where winter services were held, were destroyed. Only in 2010 was the main summer church restored and the bell tower adjoining it rebuilt.
