Historical Background
The Suzdal kremlin is the oldest part of the town, with a history going back to the 10th century. In those days earthen ramparts 1.4 kilometers (0.9 mile) long and moats were built here for protection against enemies. The walls and towers were wooden. After the fire of 1719 the wooden fortifications were not rebuilt, and only the earthen ramparts and moats have survived to this day.
