Historical Background
The town is famous for its churches: Suzdal has more than 40 of them on a small territory of 15 square kilometers (5.8 square miles). The Savior-Euthymius Monastery was founded in the mid-14th century as a defensive stronghold in the Suzdal land. The monastery survived many wars and devastations, including being burned in the 17th century after the Polish-Lithuanian invasion. Later in that century stone walls with towers were built, and they have survived to this day.
