Historical Background

This unusual mansion was built in 1909 for Alexander Dühringer, a Swiss sales agent for a Moscow dye company in Ivanovo-Voznesensk. In Soviet times the estate was nationalized and divided into several apartments. People still live in the house today.

Architecture

The estate looks a bit out of place, as if it had been moved here from Western Europe: the building is Art Nouveau but with Renaissance elements. All sharp angles, crowned with a tall tower and steep pointed roofs, it resembles a medieval castle. Locals sometimes call it the “Ivanovo Palace.”

Myths and Legends

Besides “the local palace,” the Dühringer house has another nickname: the “Haunted House.” According to a local legend, in 1915 Alexander Dühringer fell in love with another woman and decided to divorce his wife Olga. Unable to bear the disgrace, she took her own life. Legend has it that her silhouette sometimes appears in the windows. Another legend tells of Dühringer's untold riches: supposedly the wealthy owner hid a fabulous treasure somewhere on the estate grounds.
