Historical Background

Churches once stood here but were destroyed after the Revolution. In Soviet times an unusual Palace of Arts, a complex of city theaters, was built on the square. Architecturally, the Palace of Arts looks more like a mausoleum. The square also has a fountain. Today it is the main venue for city celebrations. In 2023 the local drama theater, an unusual monumental structure, turned 90.
