Historical Background
The museum opened in the mid-20th century in a two-story 19th-century mansion. The core of its collection came from the private collection of the merchant and factory owner Dmitry Burylin, who also founded Ivanovo's museums of industry and of calico. In Soviet times, paintings from the storerooms of the Russian Museum, the Tretyakov Gallery and the State Art Fund helped build the exhibitions: they sent Ivanovo a collection of works by avant-garde masters such as Kazimir Malevich, Alexander Rodchenko, Olga Rozanova and other artists of that period. Besides Russian art, the museum also displays objects from the ancient world and from Western Europe of various periods.
