Who Was Burylin?

Ivanovo has a whole museum complex, the Burylin Museum of History and Local Lore, with several branches in different buildings: the Museum of Ivanovo Calico, the Museum of Industry and Art, the Museum of the First Soviet, the Bubnov Family House Museum, the Dmitry Furmanov Memorial Museum and an exhibition center. It's no accident that many of these museums are linked with Dmitry Burylin, a local industrialist and collector who played an important role in the city's cultural development. His grandfather had started the family collection of rarities and antiquities. The Burylin family also did a great deal to build the collection of the Ivanovo Regional Art Museum. But of all the museums, the Burylin House, home to the Calico Museum, stands out for its architecture.

Architecture

The museum occupies a late 19th-century building. It was in this Burylin family home that Dmitry's grandfather began collecting. Inside, some of the old decor survives, including rich ornament and stained glass. Even if antiquities and museum collections don't excite you, the Museum of Ivanovo Calico is worth seeing from the outside: the building reopened after restoration in December 2022. The Burylin family home was restored using archival photographs and documents, bringing back a striking 19th-century mansion with its historic wrought-iron details and flourishes.
