Historical Background
This is the city's central square, laid out in 1951. Many historic and architectural landmarks line the surrounding streets: the former Igumnov Estate, the Palace of Labor, the former Polushkin Estate, the Voznesenskaya Hotel, the former Vitov Estate, shopping centers and the Palace of Culture. For a long time the city's main square was completely ordinary and dull: a small park with a Lenin monument in the middle. In recent years it has been transformed into a modern, comfortable space. In summer it is full of flowers and has swings, and in winter slides are set up here.
