Historical Background
In the 1920s and 1930s, four avant-garde buildings went up close to one another in Ivanovo. They are called the “metaphor houses,” because each got its own nickname for its unusual shape. The Ship House, for example, earned its name because it looks as if it is sailing off into the distance. The rounded front of the building resembles a ship's bow, and the tower at the opposite end its stern. Balconies run along the facade like a deck.
