Historical Background
Revolution Square has a turbulent past. Before the Revolution it went through several names, including City Square and St. George Square. The square also has a dark chapter in its history. In 1915 local residents held a demonstration here against Russia's participation in World War I. The authorities crushed the protest brutally, and more than 100 people were killed. The square later changed its look dramatically several times. In the 1930s two churches and a chapel were torn down here, and the Soviet government built the House of Soviets in their place. An obelisk to the victims of 1915 once stood on the square; it was later replaced by a memorial stone. Today Revolution Square is home to the Monument to the Fighters of the 1905 Revolution.
