Historical Background

The last stop on the route is the Convent of the Presentation. Its history goes back to the early 20th century. In 1907 a majestic five-domed church dedicated to the Presentation of the Mother of God in the Temple was built here in the Russian Revival style, to a design by Pyotr Begen, an architect from Vladimir. The church stayed open to worshippers until 1935, when it was closed as part of the campaign against religion and its interior was converted into an archive.

Restoration

By the 1990s the former church was in a sorry state: the roof leaked, the windows were smashed and there were holes in the walls. The rich iconostasis and bright wall paintings had been lost. In 1990 services resumed in the church, and a year later a convent was founded around it. Over the next 25 years the church and its interiors were restored: crosses returned to the domes, and the walls and vaults were once again covered with Byzantine-style frescoes. Today it is an important spiritual center of the Ivanovo Region. The convent has been restored and is open daily. Admission is free.
