Why “Batareyny”?
Batareyny Waterfall is an important tourist site that also appeared in Andrey Zvyagintsev's film. It starts in a mountain lake of the same name and flows through a short stream about 30 meters (100 feet) long into the Barents Sea. In winter the waterfall freezes into an ice sculpture, and the lake is covered with a thick layer of ice. The waterfall's name comes directly from a historic site just 400 meters (a quarter mile) away: coastal defense battery No. 199, part of a separate artillery battalion. Operating on Cape Dolgy from 1930 to 1950, the battery played an important role in defending the coast in those years. Today its guns are a reminder of the area's military past, and their proximity to the waterfall gave it its name (batareya means “battery”).
