Welcome!

Before you is an art object installed in 2022 by Artemy Lebedev's studio. It has several interpretations: the letter “T,” the first letter of the village's name; a whale's tail; or a person who has reached the edge of the earth and flung their arms wide with a sense of freedom. This is where the house of the main character of “Leviathan” once stood. And Teriberka itself spreads out on the opposite bank.

A Little History

Teriberka's history is closely tied to fishing and life in the North. Teriberka is first mentioned in written sources in the 16th century as a Russian settlement where fishermen came for the seasonal catch of cod, haddock and other sea creatures, which gave the settlement a steady income. Teriberka was repeatedly attacked by a Danish naval squadron and English sailors, but each time it recovered. From the mid-19th century, Russian settlers from the White Sea coast began moving here. These Pomors raised livestock, caught fish and hunted whales. In Soviet times port facilities, fish-processing plants and housing for workers were built here, but in the late 20th century Teriberka faced economic hardship caused by the decline of the region's fishing industry. In the 1990s Teriberka, like many other settlements on the Kola Peninsula, went through an economic crisis that led to a sharp drop in population and the abandonment of many buildings. Things began to change in the early 2010s. The release of Andrey Zvyagintsev's film “Leviathan” in 2014 brought the village to wide public attention.

Today

To see the Edge of the World: what could be more romantic and poetic? Today Teriberka is enjoying a revival thanks to booming tourism and growing business interest. The village has become a key destination on the map of the Kola Peninsula. Stark natural landscapes, sandy beaches, waterfalls, and the chance to see the northern lights and walk up to the “edge of the earth” draw travelers not only from Russia but from abroad. A bridge divides the village into two parts: old Teriberka on one bank of the river and the more modern Lodeynoye, two kilometers (just over a mile) to the north. Old buildings survive in the village, sitting comfortably alongside modern hotel complexes. And you can head out to sea on a real fishing boat to experience all the delights of fishing in the harsh waters of the Barents Sea.
