Architecture

The building was erected in 1770, at the same time as the Teachers' House, to a design by the architect Nikitin in the Classical style. This can be seen on the facades, where most of the architectural details have survived. Both houses were built “with state funds and for state needs.”

Historical Background

At first the building housed a post station. Its interior included a “letter-receiving room,” an entrance hall, a storeroom, and a guardroom on the ground floor, and on the second floor the postmaster's apartment and a room for visitors. Next door were stables where horses were changed and omnibus passengers boarded. In the early 19th century the building was sold to a private owner, who leased it out as a tavern. Later the Konyaev merchants bought the building and in 1893 added a third floor, where the Modern cinematograph opened in the early 20th century. Until 1930 the building housed a concert hall where a symphony orchestra performed and touring theaters appeared, and then it became the House of Science and Technology. Today the building houses the Ministry of Tourism of Tver Region.
