Description

We are on Lenin Square, and at a stereoscope again. The photograph of the place we'll see from this spot dates from 1910; its author is I. A. Tachalov. The card shows the District Court on the site of today's Tver City Duma. By following the QR code, you can get a detailed historical note about the building.

Historical Background

The prototype for Lenin Square was the Amalienborg palace ensemble in Copenhagen. As the architects conceived it, the square has an elegant octagonal shape, and at one time it was called just that: Octagonal. The ensemble of squares included the buildings of the magistracy, the Governorate Administration, and the criminal and civil chambers. Vice-Governor M. E. Saltykov-Shchedrin came here to work, and the young sub-clerk Ivan Krylov hurried here too.
