Historical Background

This house was built for Ivan Petrovich Wulf, the grandfather of Anna Kern, who is best known to history as the “muse” of Alexander Pushkin. Pushkin dedicated to Anna the famous lines “I remember a wondrous moment…” Later the composer Mikhail Glinka set this poem of Pushkin's to music as a romance, dedicating it to his beloved, Ekaterina Kern, Anna Kern's daughter.

Architecture

The house was built in the Classical style to a design by P. R. Nikitin. The building belonged to the Wulf family until 1814. That year it was bought by the treasury and rebuilt to a design by K. I. Rossi as a house for the cathedral clergy*. The house was rebuilt several times, and in Soviet times a third floor was added, which spoiled its appearance for good. *A clergy house, or parish house, is a building where a church's clergy live with their families.
