Historical Background
A memorial to the people of Belozersk who fell in the Battle of Kulikovo. It takes the form of a granite stele with a forged steel scroll and sword.

Belozersk is a town in Vologda Oblast mentioned as far back as the Primary Chronicle. Stroll along its old streets, climb the kremlin rampart, find out how a dugout boat differs from a belozerka, and take in the landscapes loved by Vasily Shukshin. Admire the carved wooden houses, too: this is where Shukshin's film “The Red Snowball Tree” (Kalina Krasnaya) was shot.

🗿 Monument
A memorial to the people of Belozersk who fell in the Battle of Kulikovo. It takes the form of a granite stele with a forged steel scroll and sword.
Designed by architect L. V. Mayorova. Forged by N. V. Mitin, a blacksmith and master of folk arts and crafts.
The events the memorial recalls took place in 1380. Answering the call of Grand Prince Dmitry Ivanovich of Moscow, Prince Fyodor Romanovich of Beloozero and his son Ivan fought in the Battle of Kulikovo. In that battle against the Horde, the united Russian army defended the independence of Rus. To commemorate the victory, Grand Prince Dmitry became known as Donskoy (“of the Don”). Prince Fyodor Romanovich of Beloozero and his son Ivan were killed, and with them the line of the Beloozero princes came to an end.
