Belozersk is a town in Vologda Oblast mentioned as far back as the Primary Chronicle. Stroll along its old streets, climb the kremlin rampart, find out how a dugout boat differs from a belozerka, and take in the landscapes loved by Vasily Shukshin. Admire the carved wooden houses, too: this is where Shukshin's film “The Red Snowball Tree” (Kalina Krasnaya) was shot.

Historical Background

The 16th-century Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior that survives today was not Belozersk's first cathedral. Before it, the town had another one — a wooden cathedral dedicated to St. Basil the Great. Sadly, it has been lost.

About the Architecture

No records survive of what the cathedral originally looked like. The stone church we see today appeared only in 1668. Like most such buildings in the north, the Transfiguration Cathedral stands on a deep foundation of natural stone. The building itself follows 16th-century traditions: its base is a massive cube, decorated in the Classical style.

Myths and Legends

The church is linked to a legend “about the building of the first Christian church”. It says that back when the people of Beloozero still worshipped nature, an icon of St. Basil of Caesarea miraculously appeared on the Sheksna River, floating in a boat. A church was founded on that very spot.
