Belozersk is a town in Vologda Oblast mentioned as far back as the Primary Chronicle. Stroll along its old streets, climb the kremlin rampart, find out how a dugout boat differs from a belozerka, and take in the landscapes loved by Vasily Shukshin. Admire the carved wooden houses, too: this is where Shukshin's film “The Red Snowball Tree” (Kalina Krasnaya) was shot.

Historical Background

The way into the fortress leads over a stone bridge built in the 1830s. Despite its late date and peaceful purpose, it feels like an integral part of the fortress ensemble. According to historical records, there was originally a bridge on the east side leading to one of the towers — although at first it was made of wood. That bridge stood until the 18th century.

About the Architecture

The bridge's monumental forms blend naturally with its Classical decoration. The stone foundations of the piers* go three meters deep, and the masonry of the abutments is interlaid with pine logs at a depth of two meters. *A pier is a load-bearing support of a bridge.

Today

The bridge is constantly exposed to damp and frost, so it has already been restored twice — in 1972 and 2012 — with much of the brickwork replaced. Locals, used to a red bridge, took a while to accept its original color when it was brought back.
