The Priamursky Zoo opened in October 2002 on 6.2 hectares (15 acres) of a picturesque hillside near Voronezh-2, close to the Amur River. Its spacious enclosures, blended naturally into the forest landscape, house some 60 species, about 170 animals in all, most of them native to the Russian Far East. None were caught in the wild for the zoo: it takes in animals that would not survive on their own, and often hand-rears orphaned cubs. The idea was born thirty years ago and came to life on the site of the former Liza Chaikina camp, after six Young Pioneer camps were handed over to the project.

The Panorama Unfolds

From here you get a great view of the animals in the farthest corner of this spacious and diverse community. Close by stands Selenga the moose, across the path the white-tailed eagles Romi and Tsezaritsa (“Empress”) keep watch over their territory, and in the distance you can see a kaleidoscope of coat colors from the dog family.

Wolf Families in Full View

Visitors can get a good look at such stars of the furry world as Dika and Sery (“Gray”), mischievous and charming gray wolves, and Gerda and Sheldon, a pair of arctic wolves so much in love that they can get carried away playing and not even notice their audience. In 2025 Gerda and Sheldon had six pups. Three of them have already moved to the Python Zoological Center in Komsomolsk-on-Amur. Krasotka (“Beauty”) and Krasavchik (“Handsome”) are a rare pair of dholes, also known as Asiatic red wolves, a species listed as endangered in the Red Data Book of Russia. In the wild they are almost never seen in Khabarovsk Territory; they live mainly closer to Asia, in southwestern Primorye.
