The Priamursky Zoo opened in October 2002 on 6.2 hectares (15 acres) of a picturesque hillside near Voronezh-2, close to the Amur River. Its spacious enclosures, blended naturally into the forest landscape, house some 60 species, about 170 animals in all, most of them native to the Russian Far East. None were caught in the wild for the zoo: it takes in animals that would not survive on their own, and often hand-rears orphaned cubs. The idea was born thirty years ago and came to life on the site of the former Liza Chaikina camp, after six Young Pioneer camps were handed over to the project.

A Place to Rest

After a long walk around the zoo, you can sit down on one of the benches and rest, but be warned: this bench has permanent residents. Two curious bears have set up their lookout post here. They sit peacefully, squinting thoughtfully and studying every new neighbor with interest. It is an unusual composition: two brown bears sitting on a wooden bench in relaxed poses, as if resting and admiring the zoo's surroundings. The sculpture is done in a realistic style with fine detail: you can make out the texture of the fur, the characteristic features of the muzzles, and the body proportions of brown bears.

History

The sculpture was installed in 2018 as part of landscaping during a major renovation of the zoo. It became part of a “living fairy tale” concept: several themed art pieces appeared on the grounds to create a friendly, educational atmosphere for families with children. The initiative came from the zoo's management and local patrons who supported the idea of decorating the park with expressive compositions on the theme of Far Eastern wildlife.
