The Priamursky Zoo opened in October 2002 on 6.2 hectares (15 acres) of a picturesque hillside near Voronezh-2, close to the Amur River. Its spacious enclosures, blended naturally into the forest landscape, house some 60 species, about 170 animals in all, most of them native to the Russian Far East. None were caught in the wild for the zoo: it takes in animals that would not survive on their own, and often hand-rears orphaned cubs. The idea was born thirty years ago and came to life on the site of the former Liza Chaikina camp, after six Young Pioneer camps were handed over to the project.

What the Campaign Is About

Good Harvest is a charity campaign held every summer and fall by the Priamursky Zoo. Its aim is to collect residents' surplus produce to help the animals prepare for winter. The campaign has been running for more than 10 years; it has become a tradition and attracts more participants every year. As part of Good Harvest, people from Khabarovsk and the surrounding area bring fresh vegetables, fruit, and berries to the zoo, which become an extra source of vitamins for the animals.

How to Take Part

The zoo accepts ripe, fresh fruit, vegetables, and berries with no signs of rot, mold, or serious damage. Dates: the campaign usually starts in early August and ends in early October.

Fun Fact

In 2025, during the two months of Good Harvest and the accompanying Acorn Campaign, Khabarovsk residents brought the zoo a record 10 metric tons (11 US tons) of vegetables and fruit, plus 45 kilograms (99 pounds) of acorns. That was enough to give the animals a varied diet all winter long. The campaign not only helps the animals but also teaches people to care for them and for nature as a whole. Surplus produce always finds a use here.
