The Priamursky Zoo opened in October 2002 on 6.2 hectares (15 acres) of a picturesque hillside near Voronezh-2, close to the Amur River. Its spacious enclosures, blended naturally into the forest landscape, house some 60 species, about 170 animals in all, most of them native to the Russian Far East. None were caught in the wild for the zoo: it takes in animals that would not survive on their own, and often hand-rears orphaned cubs. The idea was born thirty years ago and came to life on the site of the former Liza Chaikina camp, after six Young Pioneer camps were handed over to the project.

Character Cast in Sculpture

The majestic predator stands frozen atop a wild, rocky boulder, as if it has paused the world for a moment on its way to its kin. Its body is tense, every muscle fiber ready to burst into motion, yet right now it is the embodiment of restrained power: its heavy paws grip the stone firmly, and its claws gleam like cold silver daggers.

Amur Tigers: Stripes and Power Come to Life

Rigma is regal, calm, and stately. She was found as a cub, a freezing tiger kitten wandering alone along a road. People rescued the little one and handed her over to the zoo. In the wild she would have had no chance: there was no one to teach her to hunt. Shtorm (“Storm”) is a young Amur tiger born at the Priamursky Zoo. His birth was made possible by the support of Russian Railways, which took the tigers under its patronage and helped improve the enclosures for the mother-to-be, Rigma. Shiny is mischievous and nimble, like a flash of light between the branches. She first came into human hands in February 2024, when she was found in Primorye with a broken paw and an injured lower jaw. After treatment she was sent to the zoo, went through a 30-day quarantine, and now greets visitors with curiosity, if a little warily.

Born King of the Beasts

Aslan the lion is the monarch of this part of the zoo: a mane with an air of the ancient wilds, a deep roar you feel in your chest, a bearing that commands reverence. Aslan came to the zoo very young. At the time the cub was the size of a grown cat and fed on special formula from a bottle. By two months old he had grown to the size of a large dog. It was then decided to transfer him to the Priamursky Zoo, where the cub felt more at home among other animals and visitors can see the king of beasts in person. His neighbors include Persian and Far Eastern (Amur) leopards.
