The Priamursky Zoo opened in October 2002 on 6.2 hectares (15 acres) of a picturesque hillside near Voronezh-2, close to the Amur River. Its spacious enclosures, blended naturally into the forest landscape, house some 60 species, about 170 animals in all, most of them native to the Russian Far East. None were caught in the wild for the zoo: it takes in animals that would not survive on their own, and often hand-rears orphaned cubs. The idea was born thirty years ago and came to life on the site of the former Liza Chaikina camp, after six Young Pioneer camps were handed over to the project.

A Polar Bear's Story

Almaz (“Diamond”) is a young polar bear born on December 15, 2019, at the V. G. Alekseev Orto-Doidu Zoo in Yakutia. His mother, Kolymana, was rescued as a cub by the Bear Patrol, an environmental group that monitors polar bears. His father is a bear named Lomonosov. Almaz was Kolymana's third cub. Her two previous cubs went to other Russian zoos, and the third went to Khabarovsk. In 2021, at the age of one year and nine months, Almaz moved to the Priamursky Zoo. The zoo prepared thoroughly for his arrival: it repaired the big pool, renovated the enclosure, filtered the water, and added play features.

The Author's Angle

A lighthouse in the enclosure is an interesting architectural touch. This viewing platform turns an ordinary zoo visit into a real adventure. Visitors get a unique chance to see Almaz from an unusual angle: the view from above shows the full power and grace of the bear as he cuts through the water in his pool, and the top of the lighthouse is the place for the most striking photos and videos, with the whole enclosure spread out below. Inside the lighthouse you feel as if you were at a real Arctic station, watching the master of the ice in his natural habitat.
