The Priamursky Zoo opened in October 2002 on 6.2 hectares (15 acres) of a picturesque hillside near Voronezh-2, close to the Amur River. Its spacious enclosures, blended naturally into the forest landscape, house some 60 species, about 170 animals in all, most of them native to the Russian Far East. None were caught in the wild for the zoo: it takes in animals that would not survive on their own, and often hand-rears orphaned cubs. The idea was born thirty years ago and came to life on the site of the former Liza Chaikina camp, after six Young Pioneer camps were handed over to the project.

The House of the Scholarly Chipmunk is a magical little corner where every child leaves not only with a smile but with a gift made by their own hands. In a cozy room with shelves full of “laboratory” jars and glass pine cones, lively craft workshops are held: children make forest mascots and soft toy animals, seasonal decorations and mini souvenirs.

Events and Workshops

There are also educational quizzes and fun contests, so children not only create but learn: they discover nature, find out about animals' habits, and learn how to treat them with care. And the highlight is a warm meeting with the petting-zoo animals! Every child receives a small gift from the House of the Scholarly Chipmunk, either handmade or chosen with love, so that the memory of the day at the zoo stays warm for a long time.
