Who Was Vsevolod Sysoev
Vsevolod Petrovich Sysoev (1911–2011) is a legend of Far Eastern regional studies: a geographer, writer, traveler, and collector of stories about his native land, the author of more than twenty books, and an honorary citizen of Khabarovsk. His life was filled with expeditions, field observations, and tireless work to preserve the memory of the Amur's nature and people. He knew the region and its inhabitants as intimately as the lines of his own books. For many years he kept company with the famous Amur dynasties of tiger catchers, the Cherepanovs and the Bogachevs, learning from their experience and preserving the precious oral traditions of their craft. He personally took part in capturing more than seventy tigers, in operations carried out strictly on government order and by traditional methods, with forked poles and ropes. He described the technique of this difficult and dangerous work many times in his writings, turning technical details into vivid pages about the relationship between people and the wild.
