Historical Background

The Yaroslavl Planetarium is one of the city's popular spots. The center serves an educational and science-outreach role. In keeping with Soviet tradition, the old planetarium opened in a church in the 1950s. Over time the building was returned to the diocese, and for the city's thousandth anniversary a modern planetarium opened.

Architecture

The new planetarium's dome has an area of 300 square meters (3,230 square feet), producing a three-dimensional image of what you could see overhead at night under a perfectly clear sky with no interference from city lights. The building has 6 projectors that show nebulae, star clusters, the Milky Way, and the figures of the constellations.
