Historical Background

The history of the city is inseparable from the history of its football club. Yaroslavl's first football team was the Railway Football Circle. The first match took place in 1907. A Kostroma newspaper reported in 1911: “On Sunday, July 30, a football match was held between the Kostroma sports club team and the Yaroslavl team ‘Molodaya Zhizn’ (‘Young Life’), at the latter's challenge. Victory went to the Yaroslavl side, who scored a goal in the 30th minute of the first half. The second half was a draw. Up to six hundred people were in the garden.”

Dream Team

The strongest and best-loved club was born in the 1960s, when the Khimik (“Chemist”) team was renamed Shinnik (“Tire Maker”), the name it still bears today. The change came after a flood of requests from fans demanding that their beloved team be named after the enterprise whose colors and honor it defended. In any city, at any stadium, the name was meant to declare: this is Yaroslavl's team on the field. The stadium for the city's favorite team was built in 1957 and reconstructed in 2018. It hosts Russian Cup matches, and in 1998 and 2004 it hosted UEFA Intertoto Cup matches.
