Historical Background

Civilian shipping on the Volga began in the mid-19th century. In those distant days there were no river terminals or stations, only landing stages: a house on the water, a floating pier for mooring and servicing passenger or cargo vessels. The first river stations as separate buildings appeared only in the 20th century.

Architecture

The Yaroslavl River Station was built in 1976, and in 1986 its design team, led by T. P. Sadovsky, Honored Architect of the Russian Federation and full member of the Russian Academy of Architecture and Construction Sciences, was awarded the State Prize of the RSFSR for its architecture. The design took into account the silhouette of the embankment and wide views from the embankment to the ships at the pier. The building's dominant feature is its clock tower. Since the early 1990s the river station has not been used for its intended purpose; passengers board excursion boats and cruise ships right from the embankment.
