Historical Background
The building of the Viktor Rozov Yaroslavl Youth Theater is in the postmodern style. It was designed by specialists of the Moscow Central Research and Design Institute for Entertainment Buildings and Sports Facilities, the architect V. A. Shulrikhter and the chief engineer V. I. Belitsky. Construction began in 1969 but was repeatedly frozen. The playwright Viktor Rozov and the Soviet pilot-cosmonaut and deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR Valentina Tereshkova helped secure funding for the project. The first production in the new theater was the play “Alive Forever,” written and staged by Rozov himself. The theater was later named after him. In the end, the building came to house two theaters, the Youth Theater and the puppet theater, and over the years they have staged more than a hundred productions based on works by Russian and foreign authors as well as contemporary and up-and-coming playwrights. The Youth Theater has won the Fyodor Volkov Prize six times.
