Historical Background

The museum was founded in 1864 and opened to the general public in 1881. The Metropolitan's Chambers hold more than 100 icons of the 13th–17th centuries from the collection of the Yaroslavl Art Museum — one of the largest collections of Old Russian art in Russia.

Architecture and Life

The museum building was built in the 1680s by Metropolitan Iona Sysoevich of Rostov, the renowned builder of the Rostov Kremlin. For almost a century it was the residence of the metropolitans of Rostov. Then, after Yaroslavl Governorate was formed, the Yaroslavl governors lived here.

Gems of the Collection

The brightest stars of the collection are a masterpiece of Old Russian icon painting, the only pre-Mongol icon here, “Christ Pantocrator” from the early 13th century, and the famous miracle-working icon “Our Lady of Tolga” from the early 14th century. The exhibition as a whole gives visitors a picture of four centuries of icon painting and introduces outstanding works of this artistic tradition.
