Historical Background
The Volga Embankment in Yaroslavl is the city's oldest and main promenade. It stretches along the river for 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) and has three tiers. Technically, the birth of the embankment can be dated to Alexander I's visit in 1823, when the emperor ordered funds allocated for a retaining wall and cast-iron railings and for adorning the promenade with places to rest, that is, benches and gazebos. A whole 20,000 rubles was spent on improving the embankment of this provincial city. Since then the embankment has only become better kept and more beautiful, as you can see for yourself.
