Historical Background
This is a museum complex of old architectural structures of the 16th–17th centuries. Located in the historic center of the city, it is one of the oldest museums in the country: in 2025 it marked its 160th anniversary. Its exhibition space covers almost 7,500 square meters (81,000 square feet), and the main exhibitions are held in the Monastery of the Transfiguration of the Savior. The museum is a federal cultural institution and is protected by UNESCO. In 1895 a repository of antiquities was created together with the governorate's archival commission; when it opened it had only 100 exhibits. Today the museum's holdings include more than 350,000 objects of cultural and historical heritage. The museum-reserve includes the Monastery of the Transfiguration of the Savior and the churches of the historic center, the former Earthen Town.
