Overview

A complex of shops and restaurants in the style of prewar architecture. It is a typical German town hall square in the half-timbered style (supports and decorations of crossed beams are the hallmarks of the style), though of modern construction.

What to See

The square has a whole series of sculptures: a fountain with the fairy-tale bird Gauja, an amber apple tree, a reconciliation bench (the seats slope toward the center to bring those sitting on it closer together), and a model of Kneiphof Island built by hand from bricks. Across the road from the square is the sculpture of the Baltic wave in the form of a girl on a rock.

The Legend of the Bird Gauja

According to legend, the blue bird Gauja, who lived in a dense forest on the Baltic shore, hid a magic amber necklace in her nest. The necklace's magic was that its plates showed different corners of the world, like a mirror. The King of Tuscany learned of the treasure and sent a servant to get it. The servant managed to do so, but Gauja caught up with him, lifted him into the air, and threw him into the sea together with the necklace. The bird flew away forever, and from the necklace grew trees that weep for her with amber tears. That is why the sculpture includes imitation amber.

The Model of Kneiphof Island

Kneiphof Island is the heart of old Königsberg, a nod to the Middle Ages and to the series of fairy-tale sculptures by the house of the storyteller E. T. A. Hoffmann deeper in the city. The artist built the model by hand from bricks.
