Historical Background
P. A. Vakhlin's house was built in 1907. Like the building next door, it belonged to the Kimry entrepreneur Vakhlin. You can see that the owner loved using tiles to decorate the facades of his houses. The ground floor is faced with antique Mettlach floor tiles from the Marywill factory and green “piglet” subway tiles. Using Mettlach tiles on a facade is not unique, but it is very rare, and Pyotr Andreevich Vakhlin was especially good at it. He managed to combine the Art Nouveau pattern of the floor tiles with the soft green glaze of the subway tiles beautifully.
