Historical Background
The metochion of the Trinity-St. Elijah Monastery was built at the end of 1914 with money from the shoe merchant Vasily Sergeevich Gubenkov. Gubenkov was active in the spiritual life of Kimry and donated his house and a large sum of money to build and furnish the church. But the metochion did not last long here. In 1923 services stopped and the church property was looted. In 1926 the building was remodeled into the Molot (“Hammer”) movie theater, which ran for several decades. After the theater closed, the building was handed over to the Krasnaya Zvezda (“Red Star”) factory as a gym, and it has remained a gym to this day.
