Historical Background
The Assembly of the Nobility building, built in 1842, is one of the oldest buildings in Tver. The main building was erected for the Tver Society of the Nobility in 1842. The ground floor housed the office of the Assembly of the Nobility and the study of the governorate marshal of the nobility, while concerts, balls, and congresses were held on the second floor. The Assembly of the Nobility survived two world wars. During World War I it housed a rear hospital. In Soviet times it became the Red Army House, and after the war the House of Officers of the Tver garrison. It was on this building, the only one in the city center that had not burned down, that the red flag was raised on December 16, 1941, as a symbol of the city's liberation from the Nazi German invaders.
