Historical Background

This hotel, made famous by Alexander Pushkin, was built by Pavel Dmitrievich Galiani in 1803–1805. And from August to December 1859 Fyodor Dostoevsky lived here while working on “Uncle's Dream,” “Notes from the House of the Dead,” and “The Village of Stepanchikovo.” From 1891 the building was occupied by a branch of the St. Petersburg Land Bank. In Soviet times it housed a building of the Tver Pedagogical College.

Architectural Features

The building is a fine example of Classicism: a two-story main house with a tall four-column portico. The adjoining wings, also two stories high, were added later. At first Galiani rented out apartments here. Around 1814–1815, after the war with Napoleon, he converted the building into a hotel with a restaurant.

Galiani in Verse

This is the very restaurant Pushkin mentions in the opening lines of his verse “Letter to Sobolevsky”: At Galiani's or Colloni's Order, when you are in Tver, Macaroni with Parmesan, And fried eggs, if you prefer.
