Join us for a walk along the embankment and the central streets, and recall how great and forgotten poets, prose writers, and publishers of other centuries saw this beauty: Alexander Pushkin, Alexander Ostrovsky, Ivan Turgenev, Fyodor Dostoevsky, and many others. They declared their love for “dear,” “beautiful” Tver and dedicated their finest lines to it.

Description

In 1939–1941 B. N. Polevoy (a pen name; his real surname was Kampov) lived in the city center, at 9 Tverskoy Prospekt. During the Great Patriotic War the writer served as a correspondent for the newspaper Pravda. He was especially often on the Kalinin Front. B. N. Polevoy took part in the battles near Rzhev, at Stalingrad, and on the Kursk Bulge, visited partisan detachments operating in the Kalinin and Smolensk regions, and went with the Soviet army through Poland, Germany, and Czechoslovakia.

The Story of a Real Man

“The Story of a Real Man” by the Soviet writer Boris Polevoy is a work of fiction based on real events that happened to the pilot Alexei Maresyev during World War II. During the Great Patriotic War, Maresyev served in the 580th Fighter Aviation Regiment, based in the Bologoye district of the Kalinin region (now Tver Region). It was from there that the pilot made his famous flight: he was shot down in an unequal battle with the Nazis in the skies over the Valdai forests and, gravely wounded, crawled for 18 days to the Soviet lines.
