About the Sculpture

Tver is home to one of the city's best-known monuments, unveiled for the 150th anniversary of Saltykov-Shchedrin's birth. Its authors are the architect N. A. Kovalchuk and the sculptor O. K. Komov. It was the first monument in Russia dedicated to Saltykov-Shchedrin. It is made in the familiar tradition of monumental Russian sculpture typical of the second half of the 19th century.

About the Satirist

Saltykov-Shchedrin was a famous satirical writer and also the vice-governor of Tver from 1860 to 1862. The impressions he gathered in this city were reflected in “Satires in Prose,” “The Golovlyov Family,” and several other works.
