About the Sculpture

The bust was unveiled on May 6, 1972. A monument to the poet by Ekaterina Belashova now also stands in Pushkinskiye Gory, near the poet's grave. It is said that Ekaterina Fyodorovna wanted the monument that now graces Tver to stand on the Chernaya Rechka (Black River), at the site of Pushkin's duel.

Architectural Features

Ekaterina Belashova portrayed Pushkin in the last days of his life: a somber, tense face. The poet's hair, streaming in the wind, merges into a laurel wreath in the background.

Fun Facts

On May 1, 1836, Pushkin came to Tver to fight a duel with Count Vladimir Sollogub. Fortunately, he did not find him in Tver, and the duel never took place. Soon afterward Pushkin visited our city for the last time in his life. He stayed at the Galiani Hotel, crossed the Volga the next morning near the Church of the Three Confessors, and cast a farewell glance at Tver from the St. Petersburg Gate.
