Join us for a walk along the embankment and the central streets, and recall how great and forgotten poets, prose writers, and publishers of other centuries saw this beauty: Alexander Pushkin, Alexander Ostrovsky, Ivan Turgenev, Fyodor Dostoevsky, and many others. They declared their love for “dear,” “beautiful” Tver and dedicated their finest lines to it.

Historical Background

The site of the drama theater was once occupied by the Gostiny Dvor (merchants' arcade), built in the 1760s–1770s to a design by the architect Obukhov. Only in the 1930s did a theater with a hall seating 1,250 appear here. The building was badly damaged during the Great Patriotic War. It was restored in the postwar years, but its architectural appearance changed considerably. In 1995 the Tver Drama Theater received the title “Academic.”

About the Architecture

The theater's interiors are decorated with stucco and painted elements. Especially magnificent is the auditorium, with three tiers of balconies supported by columns of artificial marble.

Historical Background

Since the middle of the last century the Tver Academic Drama Theater has staged more than two dozen productions of plays by Alexander Ostrovsky.
