Historical Background

History for the ages, as we know, is made by brave people. One such legendary tale takes us back to the distant 13th century, when the Ryazan voivode (military commander) Evpaty Kolovrat and a small band of warriors took revenge on Batu's army for the burning of Ryazan. Batu was so struck by the commander's courage that he ordered the hero's body handed over to the surviving Russian warriors for a proper burial.

About the Sculpture

Sculptor: Oleg Sedov. The monument was created with public donations and unveiled in 2007. The bronze statue of Kolovrat on a rearing horse rises on a red granite pedestal that symbolizes the blood-soaked land of Ryazan, for which the commander fought and died.

Kolovrat on Film

In 2017 the story of the brave Ryazan commander made it to the big screen with the release of Dzhanik Fayziev's film “Furious” (“The Legend of Kolovrat”). Notably, the lead role was played by an actor from the Ryazan region, Ilya Malakov.
