Historical Background
In this unremarkable two-story house near the former Detsky Mir (Children's World) store on Sobornaya Street, the great Russian actor and director Erast Garin (Gerasimov) was born in 1902 and spent his youth. The young son of a modest forester adored the “great silent” and staged “film screenings” in the little apartment on Sobornaya, inviting the household with hand-drawn posters. Erast “sold tickets” himself, rang the bell and showed the “audience” to their seats, wrote the “script,” and “ran the film.” Strange silhouettes crept across a sheet stretched on the wall… But this was the first real cinema of a talented boy from Ryazan. Much later Erast Pavlovich Garin would become one of the leading actors in the theater of the famous Vsevolod Meyerhold, appear in 46 films, direct seven, and play his legendary screen role, the King in “Cinderella.”
